PLUMBING PORTFOLIO SLIDESHOW
Energy and Water Conservation
With the cost of fossil fuels and water rising all of the time, there is now a need more than ever to try and reduce the amount of energy that is either used or wasted in the home. There are many different ways to try and reduce the amount of water and Co2 that is used. Larger scale installations can range from making use of solar energy, heat pumps, re-using grey water and harvesting rainwater. The payback time on these however can be many years and so often aren't economically viable. There are however many smaller things householders can do to see instant savings on their energy and water bills.
Some of these include -
More than half the heat lost in a typical home escapes through the walls or the roof. Installing loft and cavity wall insulation will reduce the heat escaping. Combined with a degree of draught exclusion, it could also cut your fuel bills by up to £180 every year.
Fit aerator or spray ends to washbasin taps. An aerator mixes air with water and can reduce water consumption by up to 50 per cent.
Repairing dripping taps
Changing toilets with a 9 litre cistern to a 6 litre / 4 litre dual flush toilet
Insulate your hot-water tank
Pressure reducing valves in areas of high water pressure can lead to less water being wasted every time a tap is turned on.
The following quote from the environment agency shows just how high the cost can be from wasting water alone.
" Evidence from water companies shows that leakage from wc valves is already becoming a serious problem. From a sample of over 500 properties that were investigated due to unusually high water bills, Bournemouth and West Hampshire Water identified 31 properties where the cause of the high water use was leaking drop valve operated toilets. On average, six month water bills for these properties were over £370 more than the bill for the six month period before the leak".
